The Smell of Money—that’s what Big Pork calls the stench of pig waste in the air in eastern North Carolina, where much of the world’s bacon and barbecue is made. Sitdowns, scabs, goon squads, unemployment, hunger marches, red baiting and finally the energetic birth of the CIO–the 1930s were a landmark period for the American labor movement. Union Maids is the story of three women who lived the history and make it come alive today. It was the first film of its kind–an oral history, using a wealth of footage from the National Archives to chronicle the fight to form industrial unions as seen through the eyes of rank and file women.
UNION MAIDS is an oral history film made (possibly the first) from the first-person stories of three older women activists who were veterans of the struggle to form industrial unions and fight the Great Depression in the 1930’s and early 40’s.
The three women, Kate Hyndman, Stella Nowicki and Sylvia Woods, all came to Chicago as young people, each getting involved in radical activities of the time. They are all natural storytellers; each story is unique but all convey their desire to fight for the rights of working class people.

On the 51st Anniversary of Roe v Wade, people of faith (including many UUs!) turned out in big numbers for a rally and press conference in front of the State General Assembly. This event sent a loud and clear message that the majority of people of faith in North Carolina believe in the sacred right to bodily autonomy and reject the state’s agenda to control and criminalize birthing bodies. Monroe, Georgia resident and filmmaker Stephanie Calabrese offers an insider’s perspective and an intimate journey that digs deep into the roots of this divide entrenched by the 1946 Moores Ford Lynching, the last mass lynching in the U.S., and its ongoing impact on the community. May 28 Raise your voice with the Beer City Sisters at Rally 4 Rights, a free speech rally in response to the wave of anti-trans and anti-drag legislation introduced in the NC General Assembly. Rally 4 Rights will be held in Pack Square on Sunday, May 28 from 3 to 5 pm. The Beer City Sisters are joining forces with Blue Ridge Pride, Tranzmission, Arms Around ASD, Planned Parenthood, and other concerned citizens to give voice to how this legislation will affect our community. This is a City of Asheville Non-Permitted Free Speech Public Assembly and in light of NC’s new anti-protest law HB 40, we ask all participants to maintain the event as a peaceful rally.
